Subliminal Submersion - Moulding Society Through Media
Kim.E discusses the deep and pervasive influence of television, radio, newspapers, and social media on society. She highlights how these forms of media have been used to manipulate public opinion, foster addiction, and create a more divided and image-obsessed populace. Kim.E traces the transformation from radio's dissemination of information to television's scripted narratives and subliminal messaging, and finally to the superficiality encouraged by social media platforms. She argues that these influences have led to increased hate, discrimination, and emotional and physical toxicity. Kim.E calls for personal responsibility and awareness, urging individuals to recognise their complicity in these societal changes and to take action against the manipulation and division perpetuated by media.
The Impact of Media on Society and Self-Perception
Television became a big thing during my childhood, which was, and still is, a powerful tool strategically used to indoctrinate the masses.
Since the birth of television, the world has become nastier, fatter, unhealthier, unhappier, and more emotionally and physically toxic than ever before. An addiction to television was intentionally created and nurtured, and so was our hate, our discrimination, and our desensitisation through scripted narratives, manipulative marketing practices, subliminal messaging, and emotionally triggering imagery in action-filled movies and news broadcasts.
Before television, we had radio, which was incremental in influencing the opinions of all people who were within the radio frequency range, especially the illiterate. Newspapers have been around for centuries, but were only useful to those who could read the written word, which meant that to a large degree, common and suppressed people remained free-thinkers even if they had no right to freely express their thinking. With television, religion and the priest at the pulpit, who once had great power and impact on whole congregations, had less and less influence over the masses. Although always an extremely powerful, emotionally manipulative tool, religion took a step back to allow politics to rule the world stage in their favour and often at their side.
With the birth of the internet, the masses began to reveal themselves to the world on social media. We quickly learnt how to become image-oriented, self-absorbed and superficial just to get the likes, the so-called friends and followers, and the social approval we yearned for to fill our emotional voids and low self-esteem. We tasted the 15 Minutes of Fame drug from which an addiction emerged that was subtle and inconspicuous, yet so captivating. We did whatever it took to relish the attention we craved so that we could bask in its short-lived glory, and soon enough, we became masters in the art of manipulation and deception, with images that intentionally gave the false impression of the person we weren’t, living the life we never had.
Mainstream and social media quickly became the hang-out-zones. The thieves of our most valuable resource - time, made certain that these platforms remained the controlled source of all information for the whole world to be nurtured by. For the first time, literacy levels were irrelevant because emotions were effectively impacted through provocative imagery and sensationalised headlines, which in turn, greatly influenced the opinions and decisions of the ignorantly blissful masses, who intravenously consumed whatever they were fed without question. Subliminal brainwashing became the ultimate power tool through providing emotionally triggering content, and as we know, knowledge is power. Whoever controls the source of information also controls the masses, and whoever controls the money, controls the world.
With mainstream and social media, we became fanatical about everything, especially politics and religion, which have been extremely successful at dividing and controlling the masses over eons. Divided we fall, and fall we certainly have as a people. Yes, we can complain about corrupt politicians, the greedy bankers and corporate leaders, superficial superstars, the Military Industrial Complex and its creation of never-ending wars, and about the suffering and exploitation of the less priviledged peoples of the world, but who actually got us here? We did? Most of us are so busy pointing fingers elsewhere, we have failed to see the person we have become.
It is time for us to wake up, to grow up, and to own the responsibility of the person we chose to become in the personal reality we created, because we did it unto ourselves and not them. We consent to the toxic changes being made to our minds, our bodies, and our souls by willingly and unquestionably consuming everything that initiates such changes. We consent to the segregation and division of people by discriminating against and judging people. We consent to the atrocities of the world by remaining silent and oblivious to them because we lack the courage to speak up and speak out against them. We consent to the turmoil in the world by failing to inform ourselves of the personal tragedies of minority groups and general global suffering and corruption, because we prefer to nurture the deceptive illusion of peace and harmony we created for ourselves.
We play along with our blissful ignorance and allow every aspect of our lives to be moulded and controlled, which seems quite normal because we enjoy moulding and controlling others, don´t we? We have become the divided, hated people who choose to hate many things and divide people through our identity claims. We have become a people who lost themselves, their humanity, their values, and their integrity to all the diverse identities created for us and not by us that serve to further fragment our individuality. Just like those who lead us, we have become a people who are quick to vilify whomever goes against our pre-conceived ideals, and chooses individualism and to lead themselves instead. Today, we are a people who have yet to discover that who we have become is what we strongly dislike and judge in others around the world.
